Intimcity is a sex work project that aims to create a space for women in the sex industry to tell their stories. The project is part of a larger movement to end violence against sex workers. Currently, sex workers face constant danger, especially those who engage in street level work e.
Sex workers are subject to sexual assault, kidnapping, physical attack and theft. In addition, they have to deal with moralization of their work and the stigma that is attached to it. They also need to be able to earn at least four to five clients per day in order to cover rent. While sex work is legal, many of the women involved in the sex trade cannot access social programs or work with a regular employer due to the legal status of their work. Moreover, they are often unable to change their job description or work hours.
These restrictions, combined with the fact that sex work is illegal, leads to a high rate of poverty among sex workers. Despite the societal stigma and low income, there are positive aspects of working in prostitution. For example, legalization increases safety by regulating the environment and ensuring that sex workers are not being exploited by pimps. The legalized sex trade also offers a one-stop shop that provides health care and other support services for the sex workers.
The majority of sex workers are women and most are in their 20s. In the past, men primarily bought sex for money but now it seems to be a combination of money and pleasure. In the future, Metje hopes to see greater collaboration between all parties involved in the sex trade, including pimps, government agencies, and organizations like the PG She wants these groups to focus on making sure that sex work is not merely considered an occupation but is also seen as a career choice.
