This will be my first time in the area, although i have been to Bangkok a couple of times before, and i do appreciate that Ao nang is not the big mango! However i will be visiting with my 5 year old daughter and was wondering if there are any obvious "red light areas" that i should avoid. I should stress that i don't have any particular views on this issue but i don't want to have to do any embarrassing explainations to her yet.
You don't need to worry there is one little street of open air bars with bar girls on the left as you go down the main road from Krabi to the beach, behind a Dutch restaurant, just about opposite Macdonald's I seem to remember never ues Macdonald's so not absolutely sure and a few of the bars in Centre Point have bar girls - this is a square up a very narrow alley off the beach road, not somewhere you are likely to wander into by accident with a 5 year old. With so many women wearing bikinis and next to nothing on the beach, hotel pool, pool bar, streets, restaurants, etc.
Seriously, there are no people boinking on the streets so you'll be fine! You shouldn't have a problem, compared to Patong Beach at Phuket , and Pataya, Ao Nang is a low key resort that could almost be anywhere apart from the stunning scenery. Unless you go looking for it in the two areas I already mentioned you should not see anything that you wouldn't see in a seaside resort anywhere.
I would worry more about trying to explain the actions of other tourist's than worrying about red light district.. As everyone has said, nothing to worry about in Ao Nang. If you ventured into Centre Point one evening, just to relax and have a cocktail, you'd find any girls who were in the bar would all want to talk to your daughter and tell you how lovely she is!
