A unique opportunity to experience all the superlatives of West Greenland on an easy walking and hiking holiday, km North of the Arctic Circle: You will experience life in an Inuit community still dependent on hunting and fishing and eat the local's fresh catch of the day in the small cafe. Hiking at the edge of the Inland Ice Cap, through the fantastic glacial surroundings of magnificent Russell Glacier, provides a suitably artic finale to our week in West Greenland.
During the week, our walks vary from very easy walking around Ilulissat to more moderate hikes around Rodebay and Kangerlussuaq. For the most part, the underfoot conditions will be generally good, following well-trodden trails, but we should be prepared for a variety of more rugged terrain from rocky and uneven to soft and marshy and some walking on open ground without footpaths.
There will be some easy river crossings with very low water below ankle-level on the hike to Oqaatsut or it is possible to ride the entire way to Oqaatsut by water taxi on this day. The average daily distance is around 10km and average ascent and descent will be around m which will be mainly undulating.
There is one sustained ascent of m on a gravel path on one walk. This is an easy walking level hiking holiday at low elevation. However, if the weather is not co-operative, it will become tougher and you should be prepared for this.
This holiday is generally for experienced weekend walkers, looking for an unforgettable experience, who are prepared for a variety of terrain and potentially changeable weather.
