I was surprised to find out that prostitution is actually indeed legal in australia. I'm just wondering how has this affected things? Are brothels relatively common in cities? Is street prostitution still a common feature like in other larger cities around the world or has this declined?
Its all state based, so the various laws regarding Prostitution are different depending on which state you are in. They legalised Brothels in Queensland about 10 years ago, their might have being a few protests from chirstian groups but nothing major.
Street walking and soliciting clients is illegal, you are supposed to work from a brothel or be a sole operator working from home. We don't have anything like amsterdam style red light districts in Brisbane, the government ensures that the legal establishments are spread fairly evenly over the city.
Of course the huge majority of the sex trade is carried out by illegal operators, so there might be a few unoffiical red light districts in the city. Last edited by danielsa; at AM.. I live in Brisbane too - apparently there's plenty of street girls working in Kangaroo Pt but I don't go there at night so I can't vouch for this although I believe it.
